Mark Hall, President

MarkHallEDUCATION:  Associate Electrical  Engineer degree from Owens Technical College, BA  in Technology University of Toledo- graduated with honors.

OCCUPATION:  ENGINEER

BACKGROUND:  Moved to Mantua Township in February of 1985 due to job opportunity with Rockwell Automation.

PUBLIC SERVICE:  Served on Zoning Commission for 9-10 years, Mantua Township Trustee for 6 years, and Boy Scouts as Assistant Cub Scout Master, Cub Scout Master and Boy Scout Master.

INTERESTS:  Fishing and woodworking

REASON FOR JOINING MaRSI:  Likes historical buildings and loves to see things saved for the benefit of the community, hates to see old structures being allowed to disappear and lose the historical significance associated with them.

 

Carole Pollard, Vice President

EDUCATION:  BA from Kent State University in Liberal Arts and English,  MA. AND PHD. from Kent State in English

OCCUPATION:  Junior and Senior High English teacher.  Taught  25 years at Stark State College of Technology , 14 years as Head of Communications Department.

BACKGROUND:  Born in Cleveland and moved  to Mantua Township in 1945 with her parents and younger brother Dave.

CIVIC ACTIVITY:  Too busy during teaching career grading papers to have room for any other activity.  Since retiring, member of Rotary, MaRSI, Artists of Rubber City; appointed to Mantua Village Landmark Commission in 2013.

INTERESTS:  Avoiding speeding tickets as once was a competition race car driver for 11 years; designing and making artist quilts. REASON FOR JOINING MaRSI:  2004 started attending trustee meeting with encouragement from her brother.  When the trustees purchased the school building and it became politicized hot issue in the 2009 election, she realized the beauty, quality, and nobility of our historic buildings are a treasure worth fighting to preserve.

 

Lynn Harvey, Treasurer

Lynn HarveyEDUCATION:  Miami University, BA in Zoology, Kent State University MA Biology

OCCUPATION:  37 years as a high school science teacher, 27 of them spent at Crestwood High School as a chemistry and biology teacher.

BACKGROUND:  Resident of Mantua Township since 1986.  Born in Portage County with roots on my Dad's side of the family dating back to 1840 in both Kent and Ravenna.  Three generations of Harveys  before me actively participated in public service by holding both elected and appointed offices in both Portage and Medina counties.

PUBLIC SERVICE:  Member of Mantua  Twp. Zoning Commission since 1996 and current chairman.  During this time the commission helped to develop a  Land Use Plan for Mantua Township

INTERESTS:  Natural history and environmental conservation, reading, knitting, hiking, gardening, genealogy, Cleveland Indians baseball, fly fishing, and restoring my 1870"s farmhouse.

REASON FOR JOINING MaRSI:  I feel it is vitally important to properly restore and preserve all of our Western Reserve buildings and the former Mantua Center School so they can be used and enjoyed by all township residents and employees.  With community support these goals cam be affordably achieved.

 

Kathy Hughes, Secretary

Carole PollardEDUCATION:  Majored in primary education at the State University of New York at Fredonia and taught third grade.

OCCUPATION:  In Ohio, has worked in various management positions, including at the Cleveland Playhouse and Quail Hollow Resort.

BACKGROUND:  Kathy is the newest MaRSI member and jumped right in to volunteer as secretary.  She grew up in a small town in Western New York, Cassadaga (pop. 800).  She says that when she moved to Mantua three years ago from Kent, it reminds her of where she grew up.

CIVIC ACTIVITY:  Kathy attends the Mantua Center Christian Church, where she also volunteers at 4C’s and visiting the sick.  Besides those, she has been on the crew at the MaRSI food tent at Derthick’s Corn Maze, where we are sure that her cheerful nature has encouraged people to be generous in their donations.  She was invaluable at the Easter Egg hunt last year.

INTERESTS:  Kathy enjoys gardening, cooking and baking, and fishing.

REASON FOR JOINING MaRSI:  She loves history and that MaRSI is trying to make something for the community by saving the old school. Her ready smile and cheerful attitude are welcome, and her conscientious minutes of the meetings are a pleasure to read.
